MR. BAILDON ASKED TO STAND FOR GREY LYNN
DEPUTATION’S REQUEST WILL SERIOUSLY CONSIDER
The Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, was asked to stand for Parliament this morning. He promised to give the
request serious consideration. The invitation was conveyed by a deputation from Grey Lynn, the deputation being introduced by Mr. J. S.
Hickson, M.P., Parnell, and the speakers were Messrs. T. Mclndoe, president of the Grey Lynn branch of the Reform League, Mr. J. Carder, vice-president, Mr. Hallyburton Johnstone, representing Point Chevalier, and Dr. Buckley Turkington. Mr. Mclndoe remarked that Mr. Baildon was practically born and bred in Grey Lynn, and had been councillor and Mayor there before reaching the highest position in the city. “It is time you tackled Grey Lynn and brought it into the Reform camp,” he remarked. “A better representative is wanted. We recognise that you have a hard row to hoe if you fall in with opr wishes, but we are confident of the result. Mr. Johnstone paid a tribute to the Mayor’s work for Point Chevalier, and Hr. Turkington remarked on the fine work of the Mayoress, Mrs. A. H. Campbell. “I had previously said no when the proposition was put to me privately, but in view of the influential nature of this deputation I must give it more consideration,” remarked Mr. Baildon, in stating that he would give a decision early next week.
“I have never had any aspirations to Parliamentary honours, and do not feel like it. I feel I want to give public life a spell and pay more attention to my business,” he concluded, after thanking the deputation for the*honour paid him.
