Starters Appointed Mr. C. O’Connor has been appointed started at the spring September 5) and autumn meetings of the Marton Jockey Club, and Mr. A. C. Vincent for the summer fixture (to be held on the same dates as the two concluding days of the Auckland meeting.) More at Home San Fera failed badly over the Ellerslie country, but he should be more at home at Hastings, where he has been entered for the hack steeplechase the first day, and the open event the second day. Instructions During training operations at Ellerslie one day this week a trainer instructed the lad on top as follows:: — “Canter this horse round twice. A good half-pace down the straight twice, and the second time a smart threequarter pace!” Jockeys On Tour On holiday at the present time are jockeys ,T. Barry, L. G. Morris and B. H. Morris, the first mentioned two being accompanied by their wives. They arrived in Auckland yesterday, and intend leaving by the Tofua on Saturday to do the Islands trip. Hastings Racing There will be three days racing at Hastings next week. The Hawke’s Bav Hunt Club on Wednesday and the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club on Friday and Saturday. The handicaps are not due until after Mr. Coyle has seen Saturday’s racing at Greenmeadows. The Next Meeting Napier Park Racing Club is to hold its one-day winter meeting at Greenmeadows on Saturday. This fixture must be the only one where the open class of hurdler is not catered for. In the past the open hurdles failed to attract many horses for an admittedly poor stake, so it was cut out. Just Temporarily Branson’s trainer. P. Scally, came across from Avondale for the Ellerslie winter meeting and at the close of operations there placed the gelding under the charge of the local trainer, ,P. Conway, who will prepare the Greyspear gelding until the return of Scally. The latter has taken up a couple of others and on his return will again take Branson over. Lady Trainer’s Record.
Miss G. Maher, by winning at Ellerslie with Red Fuchsia and Peneus, has now won eighteen races this season which places her first among the trainers licensed in the metropolitan district of Hawke’s Bay. Since being granted a trainer’s licence Miss Maher has been most successful. It is very doubtful if any country in the universe can boast of such a successful trainer among the fair sex. We in Hawke’s Bay are justly proud of our lady trainer '.says the “Tribune”), but regret the fact that Miss Maher shifts her team in September to Awapuni.
Well Named Undergoing the rudimentary stage of his education at present is the Patmint —Lolonm colt, an inmate of J. Thorpe's stable. Mr. B. Goldwater. the owner of the colt and also the owner of his full-sister, Lomint, has named the chestnut and will race him as Ben Mur.
In Work Again That good mare Piuthair, who won the Canterbury Jockey Club’s. Great Autumn Handicap in 1927, is reported to be looking particularly well after her recent spell. She is being hacked about at her owner’s property, byit will be placed in active training soon and given a preparation, for spring racing. Jumper Disappoints Radiate (Holman) and Sometime (Anderson) were sent over the country at Hastings. The former, in such poor company was most disappointing in his jumping. Sometime jumped safely, but when it comes to racing over two miles or so his jumping may tire him.
Agrion At the Stud The brilliant Limond colt, Agrion, who, on a light preparation won the New Zealand Derby impressively, is to stand the season at Teviotdale at a fee of 50 guineas. Agrion was a higheiass racehorse, and had his lefes remained sound there is little doubt he would have made a big name for himself on the Turf. Schooled Well Braeman (Stratton). Good Sport (Wilson), and Pale Star (Lord), gave a capital display over a round of the hurdles, at Hastings last Saturday. The two former went especially well, although Good Sport got into the last fence a little. For a novice Pale Star was most encouraging to finish within a length of the more experienced ones. To Race At Ashburton Malmsey is enjoying a rest since she returned from Wingatui. The Clarem ceux mare has earned her spell, as she has done some hard racing lately, but she may be in action again shortly, the present intention being to give her another run at Ausliburton at the end of this month. Malmsey has been improving steadily, and she should be a good performer in open company next season.
Limerick’s Departure W. E. Russell, lately attached to G. "W. New’s stable’ at Awapuni, has joined lip with F. JD. Jones. He was associated with the care of limerick when the champion was a three-year-old and has come south to look after the gelding and accompany him to Australia. Jones has now made tentative arrangements to leave Wellington by the Maunganui on July 30. In The Money The record of Myles Connell, former champion Sydney jockey, now living in comfortable retirement in Adelaide, is one which probably stands alone in Australia apd New Zealand. Between 1900 and 1924, in 23 years of race riding, he scored 1,080 firsts, 908 seconds, and 742 thirds out of 5,886 rides. In almost one-half of his races he steered his mount into a place. Maunga’s Rider Explains j Maunga returned from Auckland a much fitter horse than when leaving here and his next start will be in the Hawke's Bay Steeplechase. In conversation with A. Griffith, Maunga’s pilot, referring to his fall in the Great Northern Steeplechase, he informed a ‘‘Tribune” writer that, after landing over the old water jump, Maunga received a hard bump, which nearly knocked Griffith out of the saddle, as well as causing him to lose an iron, and before, a recovery could be effected another horse cannoned into his mount and he (Griffith) was deposited on the track. Ellerslie Gallops There was some galloping on number three grass track at Ellerslie this morning, but only candidates with pretensions of going fast were timed. Storm Fiend and Have covered five furlongs in 1.7 2-5, with neither being asked to do its best. Lido finished ahead of Brampton with Sir Russell a length off at the conclusion of an essay over half-a-mile in 54. Lido has not yet raced, but she has shown some speed in her track gallops. Sir Mond had an advantage over Monetize at the end of half-a-mile in 55, but the latter was under a strong pull. The Quin Abbey gelding, Tamore, a recent addition to J. Anderton’s stable, had his initial lesson over some Ellerslie fences this morning and his jumping was the cause of favourable comment. He gave a dashing display over the stone wall and then took on the water-jump in addition to that fence again. RACING FIXTURES June 16—Napier Park R.C. June 20—Hawke’s Bay Hunt.
