FOR COMMUNITY CLUB

SUCCESSFUL FAIR On Tuesday afternoon Mrs. George Metcalf held a “fair” at her home in St. Heliers Bay Road for the benefit of the Play Association’s Community Club. Afternoon tea was served in the specious drawing room, cheerful with a glowing fire and artistically shaded lights. Stalls were set up in the dining room, den, hall and verandahs, where da.inty linen, potted plants, delicious pastry and cakes, sweets and garden produce could be bought. Mrs. Nellie Ferner, president of the Play and Recreation Association, thanked Mrs. Metcalf and the members of the St. ITeliers branch of the League of Mothers for all the thought and service that had gone to make the function such a complete success. After presenting Mrs. Metcalfe with a bouquet of flowers and autumn leaves in token of the Play Association’s gratitude, Mrs. Ferner went on to tell of the character-building work and practical training for citizenship that the association was carrying out among the young people of the more densely-populated areas of the city. The address met with enthusiastic response, the result being that many names were added to the membership list of the Ladies’ Auxiliary, an organisation of well-known women which supports the Play Association’s Community Club for children.

Mrs. Cook contributed several songs during the afternoon, including “Ships That Pass in the Night,” “The Dove.” and “The Shamrock.”
