SAILORS’ HOME LACKS NECESSARY SUPPORT

GOOD WORK FOR SEAMEN “The past year has been strenuous, but all the members have taken their share,” said Mr. George W. Sanders, president of the Council of the Auckland Sailors’ Home at the annual meeting held in the Home last evening. “We have catered for 11,000 men, which is a sufficient answer to any who say that the institution is not fulfilling its purpose,” continued the president. “Improvements to the building have been effected and it is now in

a good state. We have reduced the price of meals without reducing the quality of the food which has been a boon to unemployed sailors round the waterfront.

“The council of the Home has cause to complain that it is not receiving the support it should from the churches of Auckland. It has not been possible to make improvements to the mission hall or even to keep up the salary of the missioner.

“The City Council has increased our rates. The council was petitioned, but although the Mayor and Deputy-Mayor were sympathetic, the council was unable to grant any rebate. If we get the money, we will pay, but .if not we cannot,” concluded the president.

The resignation of Mr. E. H. Davis was accepted with regret, and members spoke eulogistically of his services in the past. It was decided that letters of appreciation for good services given be sent to Dr. D. N. Murray, the honorary surgeon, the missioner, Mr. A. W. Benton, and Mr. Davis.

As no further nominations had been received, the council was automatically re-elected. The question of the election of another member to take Mr. Davis’s place was left in the hands of the council. Officers are as follows: President, Mr. G. W. Sanders; vicepresident, Mr. J. Trevethick; chairman of the Finance and House Committees, the president: members, the Mayor of Auckland, Mr. George Baildon, the chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board, Mr. H. R. Mackenzie; Mr. W. Tailby. Mr. G. R. Magee, Mr. E. H. Potter, Mr. R. T. Michaels, Captain C. Little, and the Rev. E. C. Budd; honorary surgeon, Dr. D. N. W. Murray: auditor. Mr. W. Taylor.
