PRINCESS AND TIVOLI
“THE NOOSE” TO-NIGHT Richard Barthelmess is the star in “The Noose,” a powerfully dramatic story of the underworld which will be shown at the Princess and Tivoli Theatres to-night. Barthelmess portrays a youth caught in the maelstrom of the underworld and tossed about as a bit of wreckage on a stormy sea. His work in the role is exceptional and has created favourable comment wherever the picture has been presented. The stage play created widespread interest ‘because of its unusual theme. The picture is being even more widely discussed, for it carries the theme to heights impossible in a spoken play. The audience is taken backstage at a night club, then out into the crowds on the dance floor. Next to the death house in the penitentiary, and then to the governor’s mansion. Through every scene the interest is kept enthrilled, and one dramatic climax follows another. Surrounding Barthelmess in “The Noose” is an exceptionally capable company. Lina Basquette, former Follies dancer, is cast as Lot, the cabaret girl who remains faithful to the boy through all his trouble. Miss Basquette is_ not only a dancer of ability, but proves herself a talented dramatic actress as well. Alice Joyce is cast in the sympathetic role of the Governor’s wife, who saves the boy from the gallows. Thelma Todd is the society bud who deserts him in hour of need. Montagu Love is the gang leader who meets death at the boy’s hands. The second feature will be “Rash Privates,” a particularly enjoyable war comedy, starring Lya De Putti and Malcolm McGregor. “Rash Privates” tells of the days of the American army of occupation in Germany, and the adventures of a rash private who wooed a German girl.
