TENSE EXPECTANCY
CITY COUNCIL BUSY ESTIMATES TO-NIGHT The City Council is expected to have a fairly long, and possibly exciting, meeting this evening. From the ratepayers’ point of view the main subject will be that of estimates, which are being brought down to-night. The striking of the rates for the year is expected to cut drastically the ground from under the feet of those who have predicted an increase, particularly those who have anticipated a rise of as much as 7d. Cr. W. M. Murray lias given notice to rescind the motions passed regarding Lot 5 on the Civic Square. Ponsonby residents are presenting a petition signed by over 2,000 asking for action regarding the extension of Harbour Street to connect with Fanshaw Street and the city. Finally, there are rumours of an expected sensation, but the cause of this is being kept rigidly secret.
