CONTROLLING FLOODS
EXPERT REPORTS ON WAIMAKARIRI Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. A report by Sir Alexander Gibb, the eminent English engineer, on flood control of the Waimakaririri River, was considered by the Waimakariri Trust to-day. Sir Alexander Gibb had been asked to report on the best methods of controlling floods and averting danger from the city of Christchurch, and he had been provided with a report on the same subject by the trust’s engineer, Mr. F. C. Hay. The report expressed agreement with Mr. Hay on some essential points. Mr. Hay’s scheme provided for straightening and shortening the river in its last reach to the sea, which would involve two diversion cuts of one mile and two miles. The report agrees with these proposals, but does not agree with the scheme for trapping and holding*the shingle in the higher reaches of the river for the protection of Christchurch. It suggests longitudinal embankments, which should be planted to ensure stability.
