NORTHCOTE BOROUGH COUNCIL
The town clerk of the Levin Borough Council advised the Northcote Borough Council last evening that his council considered it only a reasonable requesi. to ask that the Main Highways Board should contribute toward the cost of permanent work already accomplished, either by paying half the cost of construction, where the work is found to b€» up to a standard, or by making ail annual payment equal to half the interest and sinking fund charg. It was proposed to enlist the support of boroughs interested, and also the support of each local member of Parliament. The council decided to support the proposal, and to forward all particulars. The Treasury, Wellington, advised that the proposal of the council to mee t progress payments from the District Fund account (out of overdraft) for the cost of a destructor for combined Marine Boroughs, could not be done; also that the boroughs should agree to the apportionment of the maximum cost of the work. It was decided to communicate with the oth€*r councils and to make the necessary arrangements to conform with the suggestion. The district engineer advised that the Minister of Public Works, had approved of a subsidjr of £ls (£1 for £1) for work to be carried out on borough streets for the relief of unemployed.
