THE WEEK REVIEWED UPWARD TREND OF BANKS (By “NOON CALL”) June 13, 9 a.m. Greater activity has been registered in banks over the week. Other sections are mostly quietly active with a steady demand for all the better classes of securities. One of the week’s features has been the increased interest in pictures. In the banking section New Zealands have got steadily firmer following the publication of that concern’s balancesheet. From sales at 60s 3d at the close of last week, the market has advanced to see the scrip held for 61s and buyers offering 6frs 9d. Sales have been made at tlie latter fig Lire in the South. Commercials have weakened slightly over the week. Sales were made on Wednesday last at 29s 9d, but by Friday the market had weakened to see sales both in Christchurch and Auckland at 29s 7d. A slight improvement was registered in Dunedin on Monday, when the scrip was dea.lt with at 29s Bd. Yesterday afternoon’s call on the Auckland ’Change saw sellers at 29s 9d, supported by buyers at 29s 6d. English, Scottish and Australian Banks have firmed appreciably over the week, touching the highest point in Dunedin on Saturday, when the scrip was dealt with at £8 13s, compared with the best Auckland price at the close of last week of £ 8 9s 6d. Sellers left the Auckland ’Change yesterday asking £8 15s and buyers offering £8 11s 6d. Nationals of New Zealand have taken part in the general upward movement, sales being made in Wellington and Auckland at £7 6s 6d. The scrip touched £7 7s in Wellington on Friday. Other banks are mostly steady with any tendency upward. Insurances Quiet Little movement is registered in the insurance section. New Zealands saw the only recorded sale on the Auckland ’Change over the week. Nationals saw several sales in the South on a market firming from 15s 5d to 15s 6d. Little movement is recorded in the loan and agency section. Goldsbrough. Mort is one of the most popular investments in this section at the moment. Dalgetys were dealt with in Christchurch on Friday at £l4 6s 6d. Ilikurangis continue to contribute the principal movement to coals, the scrip appreciating over the week to see the ordinaries dealt with at ss, with more sought at that figure but buyers withdrawn to 5s 4d. Westport-Stocktons were dealt with on the Auckland ’Change yesterday at 3s for the ordinaries. In the South Westports have seen business at 30s. Brighter Tone in Breweries Increased interest has been taken in breweries. New Zealands have appreciated 6d to see business at 41s 6d. Innes and Co. ordinary scrip saw the first sale on the Auckland ’Change for many weeks at 16s 6d. Staples were dealt with in Christchurch on Thursday at 36s 3d. Tooths saws business a day later at 43s in the same centre. Shipping and timbers are quiet. Kauris have improved over the week to see buyers offering 19s 3d at yesterday’s closing call, compared with 17s 9d on Wednesday last. Buyers of Nationals came in at the seemingly nominal figure yesterday of 2s 6d. Sellers have fallen to 9s. Little Movement in Industrials An increased demand for pictures has been one of the week’s features in the miscellaneous section. Both Haywards and Fullers improved to see business at 21s. An improved demand has also set in for Hamiltons. Buyers of Australian Glass have hardened to 445, without drawing business. Taranaki Oils keep fairly steady, with sales in Wellington and Auckland on a market ranging from 10s 2d to 10s 6d. Other shares register little movement. New Zealand Paper Mills were dealt with at 15s on Thursday. Mining continues dull and depressed, with Waihis and Mt. Lyells contributing the only sign of life to the section. Little alteration is registered in the market for gilt-edged stocks. A healthy demand is recorded for most classes of securities in this section. Return On Investment
