FAST TRACKS

COME exception is being taken by many followers of the game to the handicapping of Free Advice in the Mangere Handicap of 12 furlongs, on which the Auckland owned filly is placed on 3.272 after winning at Addington in 3.25 from 60yds behind and the handicapper is being blamed for showing leniency toward the three-year-old. The adjuster has evidently taken into account that on the day when Free Advice put up this go, the Addington track was in an electric state, as was proved by various times recorded—Native Queen 2.10 2-5 for a mile, Padlock two miles in 4.26 3-5, Quality two miles 4.28 4-5 (off 4.38) and Native Star 4.30 2-5. In handicapping the latter, the Auckland adjuster has taken the same view and the Palmerston North trotter is placed on 4.32, which is two seconds penalty for her Addington win off 4.34. When Free Advice won the famous Eclipse Stakes at New Brighton she registered 3.39 3-5 on a slow track. In this event the Auckland filly was on the front (no time limit being set) with Sonoma Star, who the previous day had won over the same distance in 3.31 4-5 on 72 yards. In winning the Welcome Stakes at Easter Free Advice gave Writer, whose previous best was 3.40 at Greymouth, 36yds and a beating, and the fact that the latter went 3.28 1-5 is further proof that the track was fast.
