MARTON JOCKEY CLUB
EMULATES ELLERSLIE (From Our Own Correspondent) MARTON, Tuesday. The intention of the Marton Jockey Club is to make the Marton racecourse as attractive (comparatively, at least) as the course at Ellerslie, and to this end the course committee has put in a great deal of work laying flowerbeds and planting out shrubberies. Critics acclaim the«track as one of the best in the Dominion, and it will be a great credit to the Rangitikei Centre if in the near future the surroundings are ranked with "beautiful Ellerslie” for attractiveness. The club will this season hold three meetings, one in the spring, on September 5. the usual summer meeting on January 1 and 2, and an autumn meeting in May. Owners and trainers will also be pleased to learn that it is intended to raise the value of the stakemoney considerably. Easy Tasks For The Count Count Cavour is in steady Work at Riccarton and he is getting through his tasks very satisfactorily. The leg which caused trouble after his fall at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day lias fined down, and there seems little doubt that he will stand a thorough preparation. It was stated recently in a Sydney paper that he was likely to be seen again in Australia in the spring, but according to a Southern writer Mr. Barrett has no such programme in view. Count Cavour will do next season’s racing in the Dominion, and T. H. Gillett hopes to have the Solferino gelding in trim for some of the good handicaps by midsummer, at latest.
