LEAGUE
HUNTLY In view of the rep. match next Saturday great interest was manifested in the senior match between Huntly and Taupiri. In the previous contest, Taupiri downed Huntly by seven to six, but the losers of that game wiped the floor with their adversaries on Saturday, running put victors by twenty-two to six in a clean, fast, hard game. The scores do not indicate the game, for it was a most spectacular display, far from being one sided, and only great combination by Huntly won the day. Timms (2), Walters (2), Paki (1), and Smith (1) were the scorers, Jones converting one and S. Rayner one, while Taupiri’s two tries represented their six points, B. Jackaways getting one and incidentally playing a good game. His brother Noel also played rattling football and they both deserve their places in the rep. team with Jim Farrell who saved his side on numerous occasions. Davis (selected rep. half) has played better games, but made no serious blunders.
Of the winners’ solid thirteen, Smith at half, was good, and the same remarks apply to Walters at centre-three-quarters. Timms was easily the pick of the pack, and may see New Zealand honours on his play this season, for he is playing great football and Aucklanders will see that this player’s prowess is not over-rated next Saturday. Jones (breakaway) also put in a good day’s work, and as a spoiler is in the first flight. He has also been picked for the reps., and a good selection too. There were no passengers in the Huntly team on Saturday and all the forwards gave of their best.
Huntly (14) battled it out gamely on Bailey’s paddock with Hamilton (8). Four tries and one penalty goal against two tries and one penalty goal was the scoring. Tuhi played a hard game for the losers, as did their full back, who, with Muir were about the pick. The winners had to pick up a few players oh the ground but it did not stop them winning. Northmore turned out for Huntly, and though not in trim, scored twice. Baker was easily the pick of those in front, where Knapper’s hooking materially helped the winners. Broughton and Broadhurst were sound.
