CHINA ON THE AIR
BIG INCREASE IN RADIO j LECTURES AND ENTERTAINMENT I Approximately 3.000 radio receiving sets now are in use in Peking and Tientsin, according to figures from the records of the bureau which was created to licence the use of this equipment after the prohibition of the import of such material was withdrawn late last spring. This figure does not include the sets which are in use without licence—in the concessions in Tientsin, the legation quarter In Peking and In some private houses outside these areas. To give these sets something to do. two broadcasting stations have been built, one in Tientsin and one here in Peking. So far only Chinese theatrical performances have been broadcast from these stations-the work has been largely experimental. Now, however, plans for more elaborate programmes are being discussed. A series of talks on the elementary principles of sanitation and health will be put on the air, in Chinese. There will be also talks on business methods; farming, and similar subjects, and some foreign music. Arrangements also are being completed for broadcasting the public lectures delivered in Peking and Tientsin—in English as well as in Chinese.
