THE SARCH
rpHE Brisbane Thousand, run a -* fortnight ago, caused quite a sensation in Queensland racing circles. When the horses were lined up at the barrier, police officials and stipendiary stewards suddenly arrived on the course and ordered the jockeys to dismount. Each rider was subjected to a search for electric batteries, and the gear of the horses was also closely inspected, but the search was fruitless. There have been persistent rumours from time to time that nefarious practices have been going on in Brisbane, and it probably was this that led the stipendiary stewards to take the action they did. Twelve months ago a similar action was taken, but on that occasion the search was confined to the jockeys* room.
