STILL NO TRACE

BUCKLEY'S EXPLOITS DISCOVERY AT BIRKENHEAD The two-seater Packferd motor-car which it is thought the escaped prisoner John Buckley stole from Remuera and motored to the King Country, has been brought back to Auckland by actingDetective Davis. There was no report to-day of Buckley having been traced and it is still thought that he is hiding in the bush. Further evidence of Buckley’s exploits at Birkenhead came to hand during the week-end, when some articles stolen from the residence of Mr. Yeomans, manager of the sugar works, were found underneath Mr. McGovern’s store. Last Thursday week two panes of glass were broken at Mr. McGovern’s store in Mokoia Road, as if an attempt had been made to break in. At that time no proof was seen that it was the wanted man who had made the attempt. On Saturday afternoon Mr. McGovern, who had occasion to go under his house, noticed a sack laid out, plainly showing that someone had been lying on it. Alongside the sack was found the knife which Buckley was known to have carried, and also part of a tin of 50 cigarettes, a box of matches, and a gold-mounted fountain pen. Mr. McGovern’s son took the articles to the police. The pen and cigarettes were shown to the manager of the Sugar Works, Mr. Yeomans, who recognised these articles as his own. They had been stolen from his house when Buckley called.
