Free Labour Call

SHIPPING CRISIS TO-DAY Appeal for Volunteers (United P.A. —By Telegraph — Copyright) Reed. 10.10 a.m. MELBOURNE, To-day. THE Prime Minister, Mr. Stanley Bruce, lias already received assurances from three State premiers, of their complete co-operation in all measures to preserve law and order when the official appeal is made to-day for volunteer labour for the ships.

Mr. J. Hogan, Labour Premier of Victoria, has requested Mr. Bruce to take steps to bring about a compulsory conference of the disputants. The masters and engineers of the ships rendered idle by the cooks’ strike have decided that they will sail with free labour, as they resent the cooks’ action in holding up the whole of the Commonwealth services. The owners will call to-day for free cooks for the Mildura in Sydney and the Loongana In Melbourne.

The Federal Government’s proclamation under the Crimes Act has been signed, and is ready for issuance if needed. The proclamation empowers the authorities to take action against any attempt to prevent the carryingon of essential services. Mr. Bird, the secretary of the Australian Labour Party, says the enforcement of the conditions under a threat of armed force will never assist in securing industrial peace.
