LIVERPOOL TIDAL I N STITUTE.—The Liverpool Tidal Institute, which has been i called upon to inquire into the probability of a recurrence of the tides that caused ' the recent disastrous floods in London, i. 3 the only institution of its kind solely devoted to tidal research work. Founded in 1919. it is at present responsible for tidal predictions for about 50 ports throughout the British Umpire, and hi. ; 1022 it received Government recognition • by being asked by the Admiralty to pre- ! pare a new current char-, of the North Sea. The Institute and the Bidston Ob- | servatory, where a tide-predicting machine is now installed, are governed by a Joint committee of the London Uni- • a Mersey Docks and HarI hour Board. ! PAINTED PlPES.—Somewhat elaborI ate, and, in many cases, not inartistic, ' j colour schemes have been adopted by < builders of motor-ships in Scandinavian j ' ! pose of identifying quickly the different j pipe services in an engine-room, or in j oth* -r parts of the ship. Not only is the I main purpose of identification admirably j served b" painting the pipes different | 1-i - centive to more efficient service. In this | connection, it may be recalled that the • new petrol engines of the Royal National j Lifeboat Institution are all finished in j whi-e enamel with the bolts picked out > in black. This singular colour scheme. I although ft might at first sight be thought i unsuitable, has proved quite durable in service, and has done much to promote general engine-room cleanliness. A PIONEER INVENTOR.—The development in the use of pulversied fuel for ships has largely been due to a wellknown American officer, Rear-Admiral C. N Dyson, who was formerly the Engineer of Design in the Navy Department at Washington. It is a testimonv to the officer’s position, says the “Shipping i World.” that a few months after he had I left this position, he was recalled. Tt i was generally expected that he would I eventuallv become Engineer-in-Oblef of , the American Navy when that vacancy occurred. Tt happened, however, at the ; moment that the Teanot Dome scandal ; was developing, and Admiral Dyson, with his high ideals of public service and perI sonsal honour, was not an acceptable person to introduce into the. Navy De- j I partment. Consequently, he was appointed Chief of Instruction, and then, after about eighteen months, retired on pension. Soon afterwards he invented i a burner for using fuel oil in boilers, and then brought out. in association with Mr. Ernest Peabody, a burner for utilising either powdered coal or oil fuel. Mr. Ernest Peabody was already a wellknown engineer in the T'nited States, and be decided to devote himself to the development which Admiral Dyson had already brought to so promising a stage. The outcome of this combination was the installation in the Mercer**
