Good Save at Newmarket Fire
OUTBREAK IN ODLIN’S YARDS ENGINE-SHED ABLAZE But for the prompt action of the firemen on Saturday, serious damage would have been done to the timber yards of C. and A. Odlin, timber merchants, of Broadway, Newmarket. Attracted by large volumes of smoke crowds flocked to Broadway shortly after two o’clock this afternoon. The fire had broken out in the engine room, which was blazing furiously when the outbreak was discovered. The Newmarket Fire Brigade, which was only 100yds away, was quickly on the scene and was followed by engines from the City and Parnell Brigades. They soon had the blaze under control and were successful in preventing the fire from spreading to the adjacent timber-stacks. Considerable damage was done to the machinery of the planing shed. It was thought for a time that the fire, which was fanned by a breeze, would assume serious proportions. The smart action of the firemen saved a dangerous situation. The engineshed itself suffered considerably.
