AIDING “SCAB” LABOUR
LABOUR’S STRONG PROTEST MANIFESTO FROM WALSH Reed. 10 a.m. SYDNEY. To-day. The Australian Labour Party’s Sydney branch executive passed a resolution of strong protest against the “calling into action of the arr.'.od forces of Commonwealth and State for the protection of scab labour.” Mr. Tom Walsh, who is seeking reelection to the general secretaryship of the Australian Seamen’s Union, has issued a manifesto which declares that there has been a gradual revolution in the conditions of the seamen, without the shedding of a single drop of blood. The attitude of the employers had changed even more than the conditions of the men at sea. At the same time, it was necessary that the seamen should realise the hazardous position the Australian shipping industry occupied to-day. He continues: “I propose that the commonsense of seamen be allowed to assert itself, and create an industrial conscience which will prevent men from stopping their ships for all sorts of facetious reasons, discreditable to themselves and their fellowmemhers, which will eventually spell utter ruin of the Seamen’s Union.” At Brisbane, the cooks have advised Mr. J. Tudehope, Federal secretary of the Cooks’ Union, that they are willing to resume on the old conditions. If no reply is received from Mr. Tudehope before Monday, they have decided to offer themselves for reemployment.
