BUSINESS AT MANGERE

CANDIDATES FOR ALEXANDRA PARK The Otahuhu Trotting Club's track is also presenting a busy appearance of late and owners and trainers who intend taking part in the winter carnival at Epsom this month are giving their representatives some ii liveners.' , The dirt track, probably through lack of use recently , is not in very good order , but should be greatly improved when the final tests are in progress.

Can She Come Back? The aged Gold Bell mare Nita Bell is a regular attendant on the track under the supervision of Geo. Paton, and she is showing that she has not forgotten the pacing art. The daughter of that good mare Agneta was a good performer in her day. The daughter of seasons back won two good handicaps at Alexandra Park. She was given

two starts last season, but failed to reproduce any form. George may find it hard to get Nita Bell back to her old form. Getting Ready for Fight Betty Moko, who won a double in great style at the last Auckland winter fixture, is displaying plenty of vigour in her track essays, although recently she has shown a tendency to falter in her gait when under pressure. The daughter of Peter Moko and Papatina. is in great heart, and should be in apple-pie order when the carnival opens. Betty has had nothing the best of the handicap argument in her last starts, and if kept on a tight mark will find it a difficult job. Beatty New Solid Sid August’s team is in good order, and Beatty in particular is hitting out in fine fashion After a long run of minor plaeings the Hal Zolock mare succeeded in picking up some welldeserved stake-money, and she now appears to have come solid. August has been very patient with the mz.re, and deserves the success achieved. Lard Lu is also working attractively, and next year Tlr. Young’s pacer should reach higher society. Another Derby Candidate The crack sprinter Nelson Fame, who was doing fine work at Mangere, has been eased up owing to a minor leg trouble. The son of Nelson Bingen—Norice was not only sprinting well, but displaying stamina that augured well for his prospects over a distance. August is also working a handsome two-year-old filly by Worthy Bond from Hundalee, bred by Mr. Bert Edwards at Papatoetoe, and purchased by a Te Aroha sportsman. The youngster, who is already showing exceptional promise, is engaged in the 192 S Great Northern Derby.

When Lady Joan Arrives S. Groat is persevering with the roan mare Lady Joan, and at times she encourages her connections in the belief that she w r ill yet show a return to her former high standard. The daughter of Logan Pointer—Belette is now well out in the handicaps, and if ever she puts in one of her famous runs of a few- seasons back, it w'ould hardly be a race. But can she do it? No one would begrudge Groat a win, as he is a capable, painstaking trainer, but

has not been favoured lately with Dame Fortune’s smiles. Roamer Ends His Career The black gelding Roamer, a promising pacer by Gold Bell from Wild Nell, and owned by Mr. and Mrs. W. Collins, of Mangere, brought his career abruptly to an end the other day on the Otahuhu track. While being given a work-out Roamer jumped at some dirt lying on the circuit amV falling heavily, broke his neck. This is indeed a misfortune for the owners, as Roamer, who had won races last season, was a very promising type of pacer.
