Just So is Going To be a Good One
HALF-SISTER TO KIOSK WELLINGTON JOTTINGS (Special to THB SUN) WELLINGTON, Friday. There is no mistake about the quality of the Otaki winner, Just So. who is beyond doubt a smart Ally. She is well related on the dam’s side. beinfe from Kosie Desmond, and is by Chief Ruler, for whom she is an excellent advertisement. Prior to racing at Otaki she had done good wore at Wanganui, so her forward running came as no surprise. She was at a short price when she scored on the second day, but many consider that her best effort was that on the opening day when she ran second to ConS Consent has proved in two-year-old races earlier in the season that she is a capable galloper, but she had only a head to spare from Just bo at the finish, and would be unlikely to beat her again. One of the surprises of the raciri„ at Otaki was the success of the old Sir Knox gelding, Sir Moment, who won both the hurdle races for the veteran owner-trainer, R. Knox. Sir Moment is seen at his best in winter conditions, and as the hack jumpers are not a strong lot this season, lie might pay his way during th© winter. An Early Winner?
Whisogne is an improving hurdler, and should win a mile and a-half jumping race before the season ends. Only bad luck prevented th© Nelson winner, Lady Gay, from annexing the first day’s hurdle event at Otaki, but she ran indifferently on the second day. However, on the first day’s form she is worth keeping in mind for small jumping races. San Pedro was not ready when he raced at Otaki, but he went reasonably close to winning on the second day. . ... Star Shell has reappeared in public and looks in good order for a winter campaign. . Consistency, thy name is Keddar. The Awapuni gelding paid dividends at the Marlborough, Eg'mont, Wanganui and Otaki meetings, all in quick succession. He has been carrying big weights, but is not done with yet. At Her Best Bisox is now at the top of her form, and though Avro defeated her on the first day at Otaki she completely turned the tables on the second day and won with great ease by several lengths. The Hawera mare can handle soft courses and may do well at some of the winter fixtures. One of her troubles is that she is apt to be badly placed early in her races, and that is against her on turning courses. On big tracks like Trentham or Riccarton she would do well. Volplane is in action again, and if he is going to do any good will have his turn while the tracks are soft, as those are the conditions he likes. Before Wanganui Ring Boy had done good track work at Trentham, and he was backed with some confidence at the river city. He could not handle the track there and was not started on the second day. Reserved for Otaki, he rewarded his party by winning the Raukawa Cup in really first-class style from a good performer in Glenross. The Wellington firm which was negotiating for the sale of Beau Cavalier had not completed the deal earlier in the week. The steeplechaser fell heavily at Ellerslie on Wednesday, but did not seem to be seriously hurt. Good Three-year-old As expected, Chelone won a race at Otaki, and he did it so well that he looks sure to win another soon. Dancing Star goes a good five furlongs, and beat everything but Just So on the concluding day of the Otaki meeting. One of the most improved of the handicap horses about these parts is Paitonu, and in recent weeks he has won at Hawera, Wanganui, and Otaki. He has been a long while coming right, but is very well at present. It is a notable fact that he seems to go particularly well for J. Barry, who has piloted him in all his recent successes. Fee Simple seems to go well in heavy ground, and ran good races at Otaki. Some good wins are credited to Trentham enthusiasts over the successes of Black Mint at the Dunedin winter meeting. On the Up Grade Holus Bolus made a quick return to form, and ran well at Otaki. There was a very mixed field in the Te Horo Hack Handicap, and he ran an unexpectedly good race, defeating everything but Maui, who was in great form on the day. Holus Bolus is not a robust customer, but has not had a great chance yet and may build up better later on if not hurried to much. J. Lowe took Catkin from Trentham to Ellerslie, specially to contest the Carbine Plate, the race for amateur riders, on the second day of the Auckland meeting, but the gelding went wrong on the eve of the race and could not compete. It is understood the trouble is not serious, so Catkin is likely to run at the Wellington meeting, if not before then. He was in great form before he left for Auckland.
