NO WOMEN IN THEATRE
If St. John Ervine, the celebrated London dramatist and critic, had his way, he says, he would permit no woman under 40 to enter a theatre. “The great day of the theatre was when there were no women either on the stage or in the audience,” Ervine said, addressing a gathering of women. The way they form lines outside theatres, and wait for hours to see a play “which the police ought to stop” does not cause him to think highly of the weaker sex.
