PRINCESS AND TIVOLI

BILLIE DOVE’S LATEST

"The Heart oi! a Follies Girl,” now showing: at the Princess and Tivoli Theatres, starring Billie Dove, is one of those rare pictures that combines gay, colourful atmosphere with a powerful dramatic plot. While the story is one of drama and romance dealing with a Follies girl away from her theatrical environment, many scenes of the famous girl-show, front and back stage, figure in “The Heart of a Follies Girl.” An exceptionally appealing romance that piesents many unusual situations is woven into the plot, and the drama hits many high points throughout the story. Incidentally, when one sees “The Heart of a Follies Girl.” one is convinced that here is the plain, unvarnished truth about the lives and characters of the famous chorines. Laddy Kent plays opposite Miss Dove in a new sort of hero role, and Lowell Sherman presents a novel

characterisation of what is popularly called the villain. Mildred Harris and Clarissa Selwynne figure prominently in the supporting cast. In this day and age of speed, more speed and then still more speed, it’s action that counts in the way of entertainment and probably for this reason,

as much as anything else, the Western type of picture has come into its own. Ken Maynard, the Western star whose picture, “The Canyon of Adventure,” is the second feature on the programme, is just such an exponent of action and thrills. All of his past pictures and this one in particular, is packed with the fastest and peppiest of action. There is never a dull moment, there’s something doing every second from the opening flash to the “final flicker. “The Canyon of Adventure” is an original story, written by Marion Jackson, and tells of early California in the days of the dons and grandees. The main theme of the huge land grants given the early settlers of the State by their sovereign, the King of Spain, and the effort of the Government to have these grants registered with the land office before its entry into the Union.
