“WHITE ELEPHANT”
QUARRY AT THAMES COUNCIL CONSIDERING SALE (From Oitr Own Correspondent) THAMES, To-day. The Thames Borough Council has a £15,500 “white elephant” in the shape of a quarry. It has been idle five months out of the last 12, and during the seven months it was worked the council lost a further £1,600. A special meeting will be held next week to consider the advisability of selling the plant and abandoning the quarry. Rates amounting to £22,976 were levied last year. Of this sum £19,083 was collected —which is S 3 per cent, of the total levied. The total revenue from all sources was £30,631, and the expenditure £31,975. The council's staff was reduced by seven, which effected a saving of £1,200 per annum.
