POTATO VALUES HARDER

POSITION IN CANTERBURY ONIONS ADVANCE AGAIN Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. A good deal of No. 2 quality wheat has been offering and is being bought by millers at 5s 5d to 5s 61d, on trucks. For good milling 5s 8d a bushel is being offered at average stations. Oats are not showing any activity locally, and 4s Id is quoted for June A Gartons. Merchants apparently have come to the conclusion that the perennial ryegrass season’s crop is a small one, and if they desire to participate in the spring demand the acquisition of stocks is necessary. There Has been some business at 5s 6d to 5s 9d a bushel, f.0.b., s.i., or the equivalent of 4s on trucks, but little seed now remains in growers’ hands. Italian ryegrass has improved in sympathy, and from 4s to 4s 6d a bushel, f.0.b., s.i., has been paid, or up to 3s on trucks. The white clover crop has turned out a very short one. Machine-dressed is worth 140 sto 150 s per cwt., and growers are quoted a shilling a lb. on trucks. Cowgrass shows little change and is worth 7d to 8d a lb. on trucks. The market is firm for cocksfoot, which is worth Sd a lb. to the grower. Up to Is Id a lb. for standard seed is being asked, but business is restricted at this figure. Chewings Fescue has hardened in price, «and offers of machine-dressed are not easy to secure. Machine-dressed is worth 9Sd a lb., f.0.b., s.i. The dogstail market is practically lifeless. There has been a heavy crop in the south, and the overseas trade is showing little inclination to operate. In addition, Home reports are to the effect that the Irish acreage in dogstail is much larger than normal, a position brought about by. the good values during the past year or two. Machine-dressed is quoted at 8d a lb. The break in the weather is interfering with the delivery of potatoes, but apart from this the tone of the market is brighter than a week ago. The heavy Northern deliveries speedily went into consumption and inquiries were made for potatoes on the Kaiwarra, which sailed on Wednesday for Auckland with up to 5,000 sacks. June deliveries are quoted at £5 2s 6d to £5 5s a ton, f.0.b., s.i., with, however, little recorded business at the higher figure. July-September business has been transacted at £6 2s 6d and August-September potatoes are quoted at £6 10s, f.0.b., s.i. June potatoes, fairly plentiful a week ago, are now fairly scarce. The Wellington demand for Dakotas has strengthened and £6, f.0.b., s.i., was paid for prompt to-day, as against £5 7s 6d a week ago. The next boat for Auckland is due about the 14th.

Onions have again advanced in price, and £.B 10s a ton on trucks has been paid.

LONDON FRUIT MARKET

The New Zealand Fruit Export Control Board has received the following cablegram from Mr. H. E. Stephens, its London representative: Arrived, the Cambridge, with Auckland consignments for Avonmouth and Liverpool, and the Cornwall, with fruit for Glasgow; consignments in good condition; prices slightly above London parity; general average, 11s to 13s. Individual Incomes. —lndividual incomes in New Zealand reach the £ 10,000 mark only in rare cases (states an exchange). Statistics show, however, that the highest taxable amounts occur in the earnings of industrial and mining concerns. Among New Zealand’s highly-salaried men are found nine executives paid between £5,000 and £6,000 a year, but few personal salaries rise beyond the latter figure. Professional men in business on their own account, including lawyers, doctors and architects, command some big incomes, a favoured half-dozen going as high as £6,000 or £9,000.
