WAS IT BUCKLEY?
MOTORIST GETS A LIFT (Special to THE SUN) TAUMARUNUI, To-day. On Sunday afternoon a farmer drove a man, believed to be the escaped prisoner, John Buckley, from Kikimuiu to Owhango. When the Packard motor-car was abandoned near a farmhouse at Kikimutu on Sunday afternoon, the driver left the car, and stopped a farmer who was driving by in a cart. He asked the farmer to drive him to Owhango, which was agreed to, the farmer thinking that Uie motorist wished to go there for assistance, and that he v/ould come bacK later for the car. That is why the information regarding the car was not reported to the police until yesterday afternoon. Buckley has friends in the district, and knows the country very well, as he has stayed there on different occasions. Sergeant O’Brien, of Taumarunui, and Acting-Detective Davis, of Auckland, are making investigations. At Owhango the man, who is believed to be Buckley, accosted Mr. S. Johnston, and asked for a lift in a car to Kakahi. Mr. Johnston, who suspected nothing, did so, and deposited his passenger in the township of Kakahi. All trace of the strange man has since been lost, and it is believed that ho has taken to the bush, where there are many hiding-places. All assistance is being given to the police by the neighbouring farmers.
