NEW RECORDS

WORLD MARKS SHAT- ! TERED BY AMERICAN | | ATHLETES AT RECENT I CALIFORNIAN SPORTS J J SHOT PUT AND POLE VAULT The clear air and smooth sward of California have ever been a paradise for athletic record-breakers. Two world marks were shattered and one equalled atyFresno on April 28. The first was when Lee Barnes flung himself over the bar in the pole vault at 14ft lfin. If this mark is allowed, it letters the record of Sabin Carr by three-quarters of an inch. Twenty-Year-Old Record Goes A hefty school-teacher, John Kuck, also came into the limelight by heaving the 161 b shot the phenomenal distance of 51ft tin, half an inch further than the late Ralph Rose’s famous record which had never previously looked like being broken since it was established away back in 1909. Rose was a giant, 6ft sin in height, and weighing round about 16 stone. Next on the list came Charles Borah, nephew of the talkative U.S. Senator of that name, who figured in the famous American sprint championship race last season when a cinematograph verdict upset the judge’s placings. Borah flashed through the 100yds dash in 9 3-ssec., equalling the world’s record. All three marks have to go before the International Athletic Federation for approval or otherwise.
