REV. WILLIAM BEATTY
A prominent figure in the Anglican Church in New Zealand, the Rev. William Beatty, died yesterday at his home in Lucerne Road, Remuera, at the age of 72. Born at Newton Butler, near Dublin, Ireland, Mr. Beatty was educated at Belfast and Dublin, being senior scholar at the Royal University, Belfast, and taking his B.A. degree with gold medal at Trinity College, Dublin. In 1875 he -won the Archdeacon King divinity prize and four years later graduated M.A. He was ordained a deacon in 1879 and a year later a priest, being stationed at Down, Ireland. From 1879 to ISBI Mr. Beatty was steward of St. Stephen’s Church, Belfast, and was then appointed curate of St. Paul’s Church, Roust Hill, Kent. Leaving the diocese in ISBS he came to New Zealand the following year, and was vicar of St. Barnabas’s Church, Mount Eden. Later he -was appointed warden of St. John’s College and held the position for about nine years. He was then appointed vicar of St. Mark’s Church, Remuera, and for 28 years had charge of the parish. He was examining chaplain to the Bishop of Auckland from 1903 to 1906, and as a trustee of the Dilworth Institute took an active interest in its progress. He was also chaplain to the College Rifles Club for some time. He retired from the position of vicar at St. Mark’s in 1923.
