WHANGAREI ROADS

DISTURBANCE IN COUNCIL

COUNCILLOR’S PROTESTS

(From Our Oxen Correspondent) WHANGAREI, To-day.

A squall disturbed the discussion on the estimates of the Whangarei County Council this morning, Mr. F. McDonald, of the Kiripaka Hiding, protesting that his riding was unable to bear the proposed share of the tar-sealing scheme. Moreover, as the chief traffic from his riding came by rail, it had no direct interest in the stretch of main road from Whangarei to Hikurangi. “Rot!” interjected the chairman. Mr. L. Webb, who, after a further heated altercation, ruled Mr. McDonald out of order unless the council wished to rescind the last meeting’s decisions, upon which the estimates were framed. He could not allow a waste of time traversing old ground. Mr. McDonald, who hotly protested at being gagged, was finally allowed to speak by the motion of Cr. J. A. S. McKay, that he be heard though he disagreed with his position. The estimates were ultimately passed, including «£ 60,000 for tarsealing five of the county main roads, against which Mr. McDonald again protested.
