IN THE MARKET PLACE

ORANGES SELLING FREELY RIPE BANANAS DEAR Cheaper oranges are available in the: City Marts to-day. * Ripe bananas are scarce and dear. THE Waipahi’s consignment of oranges from the Cook group has not yet been totally cleared. In addition, a consignme.% from the same quarter came to hand via Wellington this morning. The demand for this fruit at the lower levels is good.

Ripe bananas, as already indicated, are scarce, and prices have appreciated considerably over the week. The Hinemoa to-day from Suva brought a small shipment, but no easing in the market can be expected until the Tofua’s shipment due on Monday, goes into consumption. Good quality dessert apples and pears are meeting with a better demand. Dearer Tomatoes The market for hothouse and outdoor tomatoes has improved over the week and supplies are not quite so plentiful. Hot-house grapes are almost finished for the season, and best; grade lines have realised up to 3s 2d during the week. A shipment came to hand from Sydney during the week, but the condition of the fruit was not the best and prices ranged from 9s to 14s a case. Mandarins ex the Sydney boat this week sold from 18s to 20s a case. Pines from the same quarter made 15s to 26s a case. In the field and garden produce section the market is oversupplied with lettuce, inferior quality citron melons and celery. Supplies of cauliflowers have been short at this week’s sales. Sharp Advance in Kumeras An unexplained advance in the market for kumeras took place over the week, but, as it is understood that ample supplies are available for the time being, it would not be unexpected if values eased slightly over the next few days. Litle movement worthy of special note has taken place in the pouiltry sections. Choice heavy hens are scarce and. are realising comparatively high prices.
