AUSTRALASIAN CUP
WHITTON-NANKIVELL WIN AGAIN SIXTH SUCCESSIVE YEAR For the sixth successive year Ivo Wliitton, who recently played in Auckland during a visit, and W. S. Nankivell, the Royal Melbourne pair, have won the Australian Foursome Cup. In the final a week or two ago they beat W. Fowler and Withers, Commonwealth, 2 and 1, after being 5 up at the turn. Commenting on this feature the “Referee” states: “An incident at the first hole no doubt had much to do with the indifferent play of Withers to the halfway hole. Whitton had found a bunker on th£ left of the green from his drive. Fowler, who opened play for Commonwealth, pushed out to a clear position in the rough. Nankivell failed to recover from the sand, and it was then that the referee called a penalty stroke against Withers, whom the referee declared had moved the ball as he removed, or was about to remove, a stick touching the ball. GALLERY HAS ITS VIEWS “A section of the big gallery following the match resented the decission which appeared to upset Withers who topped or mishit several shots between that stage of the match the reaching of the seventh hole. "But prior to play, each player had agreed to C. R. Smith as referee, and therefore his decision was final. Many were of the opinion that Smith should have waited until appealed to, but Rule 35 makes this point clear by stating: “An umpire, or referee, when appointed, shall take cognisance of any breach of rule that he may observe whether h e be appealed to on the point or not.” RESULTS AND ARRANGEMENTS The following matches have been arranged by Auckland clubs: — Auckland v.
