EMERSON OUT

LAST DAY AT DUNEDIN BIG RACE TO BLACK MINT (Special to THE SUN) DUNEDIN, Wednesday. The weather for tpe final day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s winter meeting was bright and sunny after rain overnight, but the course again provided excellent winter going. The attendance was good, and included a large number of West Coast farmers now visiting Otago, who were guests of the club. The totalisator account for the day amounted to £22,957 10s, compared with £27,985 10s on the corresponding day last year. The total for the meeting was £75,039 10s, in comparison with £82,572 10s at last year’s meeting. Puff Leads All the Way Puff outstayed the opposition in the Hack Handicap, after leading all the way, and Quickform, who was three lengths behind her, just as easily beat the others. Strathnaver, who was a good favourite, was third, and Solzia, who was second in demand, was a bad last in a field of a dozen. Black Mint Again F °r the King George Handicap, Chickwheat was a little better backed than Booster and King Balboa, with Taboo and the bracketed pair Black Mint and Royal Game next fancied. Royal Game was responsible for the early pace, leading Overdrawn and Malmsley to the far turn, Royal Game led Black Mint, Malmsey, Taboo, Chickwheat, Booster, and Zaragoza into the straight, and halfway from the distance post it looked as if Ballinger’s pair were going to run first and second, but then Booster put in a great run, and in a great finish split them. Black Mint winning by a short head, and Royal Game was half a length away third, with Malmsey a neck further back. Hot Favourite Beaten Kaikahu, who was purchased by Mr. W. A. Parkinson at Little River overnight, was made a nearly even money chance in the Greenfield Hurdles, with Scion best backed of the others. These two had the finish to themselves, Scion leading all the way, and beating the favourite by nearly two lengths. This was Scion’s first win over hurdles, and he did it well all the way. Coastguard put in a bad jump early, and never showed up. Thrilling Finish With so many West Coasters present, it was not surprising to find Tip Tree made favourite in the Empire Handicap, Ronaki, Money M;ine, and Royal Saxon being the next fancied. Royal Saxon, Tip Tree, and Ronaki were the early beginners, and rounding the *op Ronaki, Tip Tree, Royal Saxon, Miss Winkie, and Money Mine were the leaders. Ronaki and Antrim Boy were ! fighting out a great finish opposite the stand, when Miss Winkie joined in, and secured a half-head victory from Ronaki, with Antrim Boy a short halflength off third, but the judge mistook him for Royal Saxon, who finished sixth. The Babe Continues to Win The Otago Steeplechase promised to be a great race until about a mile from home, when Greenstone, who was a much better favourite than The Babe, slipped and fell on the uat, and a furlong further on Captain Sarto slipped into a fence, and nearly fell. Royal Fashion, Ranui, and The Babe were running in close order at the big post and rails, and Royal Fashion led over the water, but landed badly. She was just in front of The Babe at the last fence, but the latter beat her home by three lengths. Ranui was five lengths further back third. Carinthia’s Easy Win Meadow Lark and Carinthia carried most of the money in the Domain Handicap, with Despot the next best backed. Meadow Lark, Despot, and Carinthia made all the running, and the last-named, ridden by Emerson, ran home an easy winner by three lengths from Despot, with the favourite third. In the run home from the distance, Carinthia, after heading Despot, flinched from the whip, and crossed over to the rails too soon. The Judicial Committee did not alter the judge’s plf-sing, but suspended Emerson for a month. After a good display on Monday, the leniently handicapped Jovial was sent out an odds-on chance in the Tahuna Steeplechase, and, leading all the way, won easily by 20 lengths from Ramanavvhiri, but gave his backers several thrills by his slovenly jumping, Captain Sarto would have been second but for falling at the last fence.

In a field of 16 in the Farewell Handicap, Nincompoop and Rotor .were much better backed than Fairy Herald or Queen Balboa, and with more judicious handling Rotor would have won. Lucy Locket, Money Mine, Apple Dighton, and Fairy Herald were the early pacemakers, and the first three-named were still in charge at the home turn, where Rotor and Gold Mint were moving up. Money Mine and Apple Digliton dropped out before reaching the distance, where Rotor and Gold Mint challenged Lucy Locket, and Antrim Boy also put in his claim. It was a great finish to the post, Gold Mint just getting up to win by a short neck from Rotor, with Antrim Boy a similar distance off third, a head in front of Lucy Locket.

It is reported that the meeting will show a profit of about £1,200, despite the totalisator shrinkage of £7,533 on the meeting.
