“STOP THIEF!”
CHASE IN CUSTOMS ST. MAORI ROBS LAME MAN GAOL SENTENCE IMPOSED Robbing a lame man of his wallet in a hotel yesterday, William Perry, a Maori, aged 37, thought he could make a get-away. Perry appeared at the Police Court to-day and pleaded guilty to charges of drunkenness, using obscene language, and stealing a wallet containing £3 10s from Henry John Clark. Sub-Inspector McCarthy said that accused met Clark in a hotel yesterday. They struck up an acquaintance, and Clark paid for a drink. Later there was talk of cigarettes, and accused put his hand in Clark’s pockets. Suddenly he seized the wallet, and made off down Customs Street. “Clark suffers from a war injury,” said Mr. McCarthy, “and could not follow. However, there was a cry of ‘stop thief,’ and Perry was caught.” “He has a record for this sort of thing,” added the sub-inspector. Perry was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment
