BIRKENHEAD COUNCIL
The Birkenhead Borough Council met last, evening, the Mayor, Mr. E. G. Skeates, presiding. The waterworks engineer reported that the lake had risen six and a-half inches during the month, the present! level now being three and a-half inches above sea level. The council decided to object to contribute to the Auckland War Memorial, the Mayor stating that it was a very costly and extravagant I:h#.ig for the City Council to undertake without the opinion of the outside local bodies, who they now asked to help pay for it. The amount Birkenhead was asked for was £52 11s sd. Councillors Clarke and Darlow are the delegates to attend the proposed conference called by the One Tree Hill Road Board on Wednesday, June 13, to discuss the hospital levy. A letter was received from the All Saints’ vestry regarding the extension of cemetery grounds, and asking the council to retain control, but to set aside a portion to be consecrated for Anglican burials. It was decided to set aside two acres out of the three and a-half acres for this purpose.
