Australian Scots Pay Visit to the Old Land
Cruise on the Clyde FAREWELL TO GLASGOW
(United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian Press Association) Reed. 9.5 a.m. LONDON, Tuesday. The Australian Scots cruised on the Clyde, passing the Kyles of Bute. The delegates threw sample boxes of Australian products aboard Irishbound steamers. Passing Brown’s yard, where the cruiser Canberra is being constructed, they sang the National Anthem. Half of them go to Perth and half to Dundee this afternoon.
The chairman’s farewell message to Glasgow was: “We would love you to come to Australia to work and prosper, and then return on holiday and tell your kinsfolk of your success and induce emulation for the Empire. “Auld Lang Syne.” Previously officials of the Clyde Trust had conferred with the delegates, resulting in a tentative agreement for direct consignments, particularly of fruit and dairy produce. Several delegates intimated that they agreed to employ 50 young Scotsmen who sail at the end of the year unaided by the Governments. MIGRATION QUESTION
Numerous applications were received from factory girls desiring to emigrate, which the delegates could only promist! to forward. It is significant that only one per cent, of the prospective emigrants are experienced farm workers, due to Canada having attracted the Scots folk. An encouraging feature is the number of small capitalists interested. The Australian Scots complain that the official Government propaganda is entirely unsatisfactory for this class of migrant, who consequently does not know anything whatever of the conditions obtaining in Australia. A hundred unemployed wishing to send a deputation to the Australian Scots were disappointed to find the headquarters deserted. They told the Australian Press Association that they deplored the rumour that Australian Labourites did not want their kinsfolk.
