“SURPRISE” CAMPAIGN

TO RELIEVE WORKLESS MANUFACTURERS’ DECISION A “surprise” campaign to assist employment in Auckland is to be sprung by the Manufacturers’ Association, which discussed the unemployment problem yesterday. The question of unemployment, said the president, Mr. G. Finn, had been discussed at the National Industrial Conference, and a report had been brought down to assist in relief aifd to suggest means of prevention. “In the face of it we can’t do anything much,” he continued. “No doubt the Government will act quickly, seeing that we were there to give the Government a lead. It is an excellent opportunity for us to boost our own business and at the same time we may help to limit the amount of unemployment.” Mr. A. W. Parker said he had an idea that if everyone could be persuaded to buy some class of locallymade articles for one week the result would be most beneficial. Mr. Finn: In my own opinion there should not be a man out of work in New Zealand. In the country districts there is work for every one. A Member: They won’t go. “They will go if sufficient inducements are there,” said Mr. Finn. “This time of the year they might be cultivating the pastures. I guarantee is work for thousands. The farmers may not have ready money, and we should give them funds instead of spending money on digging holes and filling them up again.” The president said this assistance of the farmer would bring 75 per cent, of the money back again, and exports would be increased. “I sometimes feel ashamed of New Zealand, where people walk about looking for work,” said Mr Finn. It was decided to launch the cam-; paign to relieve unemployment. £ subcommittee was appointed to interview the Mayor with the idea of getting the City Council to subsidise work done for private people.
