STATE CANNOT HELP
HARBOUR BRIDGE SCHEME DEPUTATION TO MR. COATES Because no definite proposal has been put before him, the Prime Minister. the Right Hon. J. G. Coates, is not prepared to recommend the Government engineers to investigate the Waitemata Harbour bridge proposal. Even if this step were taken, he said, in reply to a deputation yesterday, the cost would have to be apportioned for the Government did not possess funds for such a work at present. Air. A. Harris, M.P., who headed the deputation asked for Government help toward the cost of investigation. Air. Coates, said he had never yet received any definite information from the promoters of the scheme. The only requests that had come to him were that the Government should construct the bridge. Obviously the Government had no money at present for the work. It had to be remembered that very large sums were being spent upon the new Auckland railway station and the Westfield deviation, which were reallv urgent works.
He was in no way opposed to the scheme. Apart from engineering questions, the apportionment of the cost would have to be decided.
