HIS MAJESTY’S
-"MADAME POMPADOUR” The 15th King Louis of France was not a bit like the Laird of Cockpen, an honest Scot whose mind, we are told, was taken up “wi’ affairs of the State.” Oft-times, Louis was more taken up by affairs of the heart than the State business of France, and so it is that history introduces us to that witty and romantic mistress of his, Madame de Pompadour. In the musical comedy of that name, which is being presented at His Majesty’s Theatre by J. C. Williamson, Ltd., we meet the gay, vivacious, able Marquise in the person of Miss Beppie cle Vries. She leads us finely through a joyous story of the French Court —a story quaint and amusing, told in brisk language and in pleasant song. There was a big audience, and it enjoyed, the piece thoroughly, for the dressing is a thing greatly to be admired; the comedy (with Arthur Stigant as the mainspring) is brisk and clever; and the singing of Beppie de Vries, Frank Webster and the company pleases the ear. Frank Webster did well in his part as a brief lover of Madame de Pompadour. Summed up, the whole show is bright, colourful, humorous, clever and takingly musical. When that is said, there is not much more to be added. “Madame Pompadour” will be presented again this evening.
Arthur Stone, the popular featured comedian, has been loaned to Fox for a leading role in “Mister Romeo.” He will appear opposite Nancy Carroll and Francis Lee.
