ACCUMULATOR TERMS
Group.—A single set of positive or negative plates burned to a pillar strap. The number of plates used depends on the size of the battery. Element.—One positive group and one negative group with the required separators—the negative group always has one more plate than the conjoined positive group. Separator.—The insulator used to prevent the positive and negative plates in the element from coming in contact with each other. Cell. —The rubber jar or container with elements. For commercial pur- . poses each cell is rated at two volts; I hence a six-volt battery has three cells; a twelve-volt battery six cells, and so on. Connector. —The lead bar or rod which connects the positive group of one cell to the negative group of the adjoining cell. The connectors are burned to the pillar of the pillar strap. Terminal. —The contrivance at the positive or negative end of the battery to which the leads of the electrical system of the car are attached. Vent Cap or Plug.—The hard rubber stopper that screws into the vent or opening in the jar cover. This opening is needed for inspection and the admission of electrolyte or water, etc. Electrolyte.—The liquid used in the cell to permit the current to flow when
the battery is in action and which performs electro-chemical functions. It is a mixture of sulphuric acid and water. The proportion of water and acid; is measured by the specific gravity of the mixture, thus a gravity reading of 1.275 means the mixture is 1.275 times heavier than water.
