WOOLLY TOOWOOMBA
DOPED THISTLES There is every reason to believe that a gang of dope fiends is at work on racecourses in the territory of the Downs and South-Western District Racing Association (N.S.W.), and even beyond its borders, according to Toowoomba reports. It is stated that three or four horses were “got at” at Inverell, while at a previous meeting at Goondiwindi, Adrora, who was highly fanced for the Cup, was badly doped. At Texas, Hartvale, the favourite for the Ladies’ Bracelet, was prevented from winning by the use of dope. At th© Clifton Cup meeting a man suspected of belonging to the gang, was observed on the course by a prominent racing official and he lost no time in getting over the fence. At last week's Goondiwindi races, the utmost precautions were taken by the club to prevent horses being doped. In all 40 horses started at the fixture and each had an attendant in his stall. In addition, three men were employed by the club to act as patrols over the ho.rse-stalls. It is believed that some of the gang wer© in Goondiwindi, but the vigilance of the club gave them little chance to do any mischief. The dope is administered to the horses, it is said, on thistles. Unlucky Performer
One of the most Unlucky horses at Ellerslie the first two days was the Cambridge-owned and trained Tinokoa. He was slow away in the sprint the first day and then put in a brilliant burst, running a splendid race throughout to finish not far away from the placed division. On Monday he was running on just at the back of the four that flashed over the winning point in a line in the King George Handicap, so that if Tinokoa’s turn does not come to-day his owner may have to wait for Trentham. The gelding is well, and what is more he doesn’t mind the soft going. A Nice Double The Trentham stable of A. Goodman brought off a good double on Saturday. Ring Boy, owned by Mr. H. H. Tyer, and Black Mint, owned by Mr. W. H. Ballinger, both of Wellington—each horse being trained by Goodman —were successful in their races. Ring Boy won the Raukawa Cup at Otaki, and Black Mint scored in the Birthday Handicap at Dunedin. Prior to racing at the recent Wanganui meeting Black Mint, in addition to being trained by Goodman, was also jointly owned by him, but he sold his half share to Mr. Ballinger. Goodman himself was present at Otaki on Saturday, Black Mint going down in charge of H. Pritchard, who also took down Royal Game, who is trained by him for Mr. Ballinger. This double event makes one of the best days enjoyed by Trentham-trained horses for some time past.
