NOT TRUE TO LABEL
BRANDY IN WRONG BOTTLES LICENSEE’S COSTLY MISTAKE (From Our Own .C or respondent) WHANGAREI, To-day. In the Whangarei Magistrate’s Court to-day Cyril Powell, licensee of the Commercial Hotel, was fined £2O and costs £2l ss, a total of £4l ss, for selling brandy from a bottle labelled Hennessy’s Three Star, which was not according to the label. The charge alleged that defendant had in his possession bottles bearing the label “Hennessy’s Three Star” brandy, which he made use of for bottling liquor for sale without destroying the labels first. The magistrate, Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M., said it was a pernicious practice, and he only inflicted the minimum fine in view of the heavy costs due to the first analysis being disputed and a second one becoming necessary, which fully confirmed the first analysis. The offence was serious, he added, since the ordinary bar client was quite unable to tell whether the liquor sold to him was of the quality expected or not.
