APPEAL TO SHIPS’ COOKS
Owners Will Call for Volunteers
(United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) Reed. 10.46 a.m. SYDNEY, To-day. INTER-UNION negotiations for the settlement of the strike were interrupted yesterday by the holiday, but are being resumed to-day.
Strong representations are being made by the Trades Union Council to the cooks to allow them to negotiate with the owners as their fellow unionists are feeling the pinch of enforced idleness. The owners’ patience is nearly exhausted and they intend, if the strike is not settled next week, to make a call f<sr volunteers, for whom they will seek Federal protection. Brisbane branch of the Cooks' Union, commenting on the strike, said that Mr. J. Tudehope, Federal Secretary, had the confidence of the cooks in the past, but since he changed his attitude from arbitration to direct action, he had lost the backing of many members. Mr. Snell added that the Brisbane branch favoured the abolition of the roster system.
