Cochet and Helen Wills are Victors
HARD-COURT FINALS ENGLISH GIRL’S GREAT FIGHT (United P.A. —By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian Press Association) Reed. 9.35 a.m. PARIS, Monday. The hard court tennis finals resulted as follows: MEN’S SINGLES Cochet beat Lacoste, 5—7, 6—3, 6—l, 6—3. WOMEN’S SINGLES Miss Wills, United States, beat Miss Bennett, England, 6—l, 6—2. The Cochet-Lacoste match produced almost superhuman tennis in the first set, but after that Lacoste fell away from top form, and in the last set showed signs of tiring, indicating that he had not fully recovered from his recent illness. Cochet played inspiredly, superb alike in driving and finding the corners and side-lines. Volleying crisply and accurately lie took five games running in the third set. Lacoste fought desperately in the fourth set, but did not attain his normal high pace. There were many breathless moments when Cochet six times failed to win the match ball. The last game of the Wills-Bennett match lasted 50 minutes. The English girl, a great trier and tactician, made Miss Wills work throughout, but the latter’s superior pace and length carried the day. The score rather flatters Miss Wills.
