Keen Trotting at Hastings

DEALER WINS CHIEF EVENT MOKANNA LANDS DOUBLE (Special to THE SUN) HASTINGS, Monday. Considering the recent heavy rain the track was in wonderfully good order for the Hawke’s Bay Trotting Club’s winter meeting, held to-day. The racing on the whole was very interesting, though there were one or two easy victorThe 10s tote proved popular, though the figures showed a decrease on the 192 meeting* there being no fixture last June. The total isator figures were: 1926, £10,822; 1928, £9,210 10s; a decrease of £1,611 10s. Outsider Scores In the Clive Handicap Ngahuia was a good favourite, but never showed up. Pearlgana was slow to leave the mark, but Regret got well away, and passing the stand was leading Vel Locanda

and El Direct. Running along the back El Direct ran up to Regret and was just in front coming around the bend, but then Electric Gold and Vanity Boy put in their claims and left the remainder of the field behind. Electric Gold finished on well to beat Vanity Boy by a clear length, El IDirect being well back, a little ahead of Vel Locanda, the remainder beingstrung out. Only Two In It In the Havelock Handicap there was a rush to be on Mokanna, and Corrigan’s gelding duly landed the stake, but was hard at it to stall off Rangitero, who had a slight advantage 50yds from home, when he broke badly. These two led throughout, the others having no chance. Brent Boy and King Peter, the latter being slow to get away, fought out a good finish for third money, Brent Boy prevailing by a head. Logan Star Delivers the Goods Logan Star was a slightly better favourite than Trumpeter for the Napier Handicap, and the public fancies filled the places. Zolock Wood was the early pacemaker, and then Logan Star took up the running, and was never afterwards headed. Trumpeter, Jasper and Zolock Wood were in that order behind Logan Star entering the straight, and there was a good tussle between them for second money. There appeared to be a little confusion just before the post was reached. As a result of an inquiry, Trumpeter, who was second, was put back into fourth place, Jasper who ran into third place went up to second and Zolock Wood, who was fourth, went into third. Logan Star’s placing was unaltered, as he was clear of the trouble. Dealer Strolls Home In the East Coast Handicap Raima was looked upon as a good thing, but the best he could do was finish fourth. When the flags fell Dealer got into his stride early, and running along the back was leading Native Hero and George the Fourth. Tne same order was maintained round the bend. Passing the stands Hostess and Raima were close behind the leaders. Down the back the second time Dealer and Native Hero cleared away, being 12 lengths clear of the remainder coming round the turn. Dealer then left Native Hero behind, who was four lengths ahead of Speed King when turned for home. Dealer went on to win comfortably by four lengths, with Native Hero half a length in front of Speed King. Great Eyre At Last For the Hastings’ Handicap Ngahuia was again installed favourite, but the winner turned up in Great Eyre. There was a rush for positions at the start, Ngahuia showing the way to Great Eyre and Regret as they went out of the straight into the back stretch. Great Eyre moved up making for the far turn, Hilltop going fast. Great Eyre was first to turn for home from a bunched field, when Hilltop came away and went after her, but

Great Eyre finished strong enough to gain the victory by a length. Mokanna Again In the Stewards Handicap, Mokanna was installed very hot favourite, being twice as well-backed as Tui Bells and Brent Boy. When let go Rangitero went to the. front followed by Brent Boy, Akenehi and Mokanna, the order being much the same round the far turn. Passing the stands the first time Rangitero just led Mokanna, Brent Boy and Akenahi. Coming to the far bend Mokanna, who had fallen back a little, moved up again and was on equal terms with Rangitero at the home turn, where nothing else had a chance with these tw r o, who were striding beautifully. Mokanna finished best to beat Rangitero by half a length, with Brent Boy 12 lengths back, just in front of Tui Bells and King Peter. Childe Audubon Makes Amends The June Handicap saw spirited betting, Haerenga Pai and Worthy Bingen being almost equal favourites. The race was run in fading light, and it was hard to distinguish colours. Dealer got nicely away, followed by Worthy Bingen, the eventual winner, Childe Audubon being fourth running along the back. At the far bend Childe Audubon moved up with the leader and was first into the straight, going on to win easily. The Shrew finished fourth.
