KEEN TROTTING CONTESTS
Quality Wins Paparua Handicap
LOGAN CHIEF’S GOOD PPICE
FE winter fixture of the Canterbury Park Trotting- Club was concluded in pleasant weather. The attendance was large and the track in good order. Speculation was brisk, the machine handling £36,040 for the day, making a total of £61,827 10s for the meeting against £58,563 last year, an increase of £3,264 10s.
(Special to THE SUN)
CHRISTCHURCH, Monday, yi/ ITH a round to go Rose Audo took charge and remained in that position to win the Progressive Handicap with a bit in hand. She stayed on better than she usually does, and Its an honest trotter. Connie Audubon and Lonesome • were going well in front when they went in the air. With six furlongs covered Underviewer, Nelson Boy, Dolores, Oval and Lady Fan were following Rose Audo. Half a mile from home Underviewer cried enough, and Nelson Boy moved up to second place, but when it came to the straight he weakened and Dolores, who had lost ground through making a break, came with a great run and was gathering Rose Audo fast when she broke 10 yards from the judge. Dolores has a lot of speed, but still knows how to make a break. Secret Link, Tot Logan and New Metford broke at the start. Roi L’or All The Way
The four-year-old gelding Roi L’or led all the way to win the Harewood Handicap nicely from Kreisler, who lost a lot of ground by an inaccurate beginning. Had he left the mark he would have won. Carbine Direct was in second place at the two furlongs peg in 36 2-5. With a round to go, Dundas Boy raced up to the leader and was in second place going along the back, where he remained till the straight was reached, where he commenced r.o tire. Exclusive, Heroic, Royal Authoress, Audubon Lad, Asset, and Mac Dillon had every chance, but they were not good enough. Mercury broke badly at the start. Of the beaten division .Dick Logan gave the most promise. The mile was compassed in 2.19, and the last two furlongs were negotiated in 34 3-5. Easy for Quality Quality toddled home in the Paparua Handicap. She was slow to find her speed, but once set to her work she soon gathered her field and travelling fast over the last half-mile, she mowed down the leaders as if they were thirdraters. She is by Denver Huon from Lady Superior, and is trained by C. S. Donald, who drove her. At the start Event jigged and Parkwood made a skip. Acre was soon in the lead and led past the first quarter disc in 38 1-5. On reaching the stand Logan Park joined Acre and the pair raced on terms, with Parkwood, Daphne De Oro and then. Harold Thorpe following in close formation. Logan Park went to the front entering the back stretch, and was down at the mile disc in 2.18 2-5. There was no change till they straightened for the final run going down the back, where Acre dashed to the front with Quality, Parkwood, Daphne De Oro and Harold Thorpe in pursuit. On reaching the head of the stretch Quality headed Acre, who then made a break, and Harold Thorpe took second place, but Acre came again, the result ending in Quality winning easily from Harold Thorpe, who beat Acre for second money. After striking trouble at the far bend Daphne De Oro came on to fill fourth place. invader’s Three-Year-Old Heat After a bad beginning Invader came home to win the Maturity Handicap in great style, and to down Great Logan by a narrow margin. For a three-year-old it was a dead game performance, and a great advertisement for his sire, Rey De Oro. Invader is owned by Messrs. McLaehlan and Donald, and is trained by C. S. Donald. Great Logan and Linkman began quickly, but with two furlongs accounted for in 38 2-5, Dilnon took charge, and was sailing along in great style as he passed the: half-mile in 1.12, but Great Logan, Wild Nita and Linkman were handy. Entering on the last lap Wild Nita assumed possession with Great Logan, Linkman, Rafa, Invader and Author Franz drawing into the picture. TYild Nita was first in line for home, but Great Logan soon headed her, and then along came Invader, who finishing like a lion, got up in time to win by a neck. The mile was cut out in 2.21 2-5, and the last tw r o furlongs occupied 36 1-5. Petroleuse at Last Petroleuse registered a much overdue win in thfe Elevation Handicap. She stayed on better than in her recent essays and was full of running at the finish. The American trotter, Maxegin, led for a mile and three-quarters and then commenced to tire. He is a stylish mover that will do better later on. Sarsaparilla and Great Amazon gave patchy displays, and Audobell made a bad break, while Nourmahal again show r ed that two miles? is too far for her. Our Lady gained third money through sticking to her work all the way. Kerrwood Bell v T as early in second place, but she found the task beyond her, having to be content with second place. The first mile was done in 2.22 2-5, mile and a-half in 3.34, and the final two furlongs in 35sec. A Stirring Finish Ten horses came into the straight like a regiment in action to furnish a snappy finish for the Advance Handicap. Glenelg, who had led out from the start, was still in charge, with Jean McElwyn, Epigram. Logan Chief, Peter Bingen, Black Admiral, St. Maura, Car-
dinal Logan and Prince Pointer, all in the fighting Line. Just as they straightened for home Black Admiral and St. Maura's sulky wheels became locked, and caused both pacers to stop, and Prince Pointer could not get through. Gkmelg faded a little a furlong from home, where Epigram loomed up and eventually secured the lead, but Logan Chief put in a terrific run and managed to overha.ul him in the last dozen strides, and win well. Talent went a fine race to be in fourth place. After being up with the leader at half a mile Bessie Logan stopped to a walk. Waitaki Girl and Logan
Park failed to go away smoothly, and were soon in the ruck. Arran Chief Just Fails Had Arran Chief’s driver not kept the gelding so far back for seven furlongs in the Telegraph Handicap, he would' ha\ r e been home and dried. He was fourth -with six furlongs to go and with half a mile covered in 1.7, he was still pulling his driver out of the sulky, and under a tight rein, the gelding came into the straight, and not till the grandstand w r as reached was he allowed his head. Then he flew and despite the peculiar race he was driven he only got beaten by a neck. Dillon Gold \\ r as well-placed early, and taking charge going along the back, he lasted long enough to win by a narrow margin. Albert Logan was in front early, and Diamond Child was never further back than third, in which place he finished. Direct Morning showed a lot of speed in the middle stages, but it is obvious that he is not much good. Lady Matchlight went away on a break, and lost a lot of ground. Saddle to Nihilist Junr. Sunstorm was first to move off in the Final Handicap with Great Triumph, Direct Todd and Lord Bingen well placed. Great Triumph broke before going 100 yards. Sunstorm led past the stand, but going along the back Nihilist Junr., ran through and Tommy Direct and Locanda General improved their positions. Nihilist Junr., was first in line for home, and managed to retain his position to win by a narrow
margin from the fast-finishing Tommy Direct, with Locanda General and Succession the next to finish. Following are the results: progressive Handicap, of £170; 1* miles.—3 Rose Audo (E. E.
