WAIPA INTERESTS

On behalf of the Waipa Rugby Union a presentation was made to the late secretary, Mr. L. O. Morgan, on Friday evening. Mr. Quin, the chairman, said the union desired to show its appreciation, and the gift (a crystal water jug) was decided upon. The recipient suitably replied.

Mr. F. J. Harper, of the Tc Awamutu branch of the Bank of New Zealand, has been transferred on promotion to Taneatua. Mr. R. C. Hill, of Lower Hutt, succeeds him at Te Awamutu.

Mr. A. R. Wood, of the Te Awamutu Post Office staff, has been transferred to Huntly.

Mr. G. S. Clarke, of Punui Road. Te Awamutu, was successful in securing the imported Jersey bull Beuveland Tim at the combined sale of the Conandale and Besses Jersey herds, held at New Plymouth showgrounds recently. The price paid was 210 guineas

THE GAMBIA RIVER.—An arrival at Auckland to-morrow, according to her wireless advice, will be the steamer Gambia River, with phosphates from Makatea Island. She will unload about 4,000 tons at King’s Wharf to the agency of Henderson and Macfarlane, Ltd., and the remainder at Lyttelton.

RUAHINE FROM HOME.—At. 3.25 p.m. on Friday the New Zealand Shipping Company’s liner Ruahine arrived at Wellington from London and Southampton, via the Panama route. The Ruahine loaded at London and left there at 3 p.m. on April 2E, arriving at Southampton at 8.30 a.m. on April 26. After picking up passengers and mails, the Ruahine resumed her voyage at 1.30 p.m. on the same date, and arrived at Colon at 8 p.m. on May 10. The passengers went ashore for a spell. The vessel sailed again at 6 a.m. on May 11 and arrived at Balboa at 1.30 p.m. on the same date. The passengers were able to go ashores for a few hours, and the voyage was resumed at 9.15 p.m. on May 11. The Ruahine arrived off Pitcairn Island at 3.15 p.m. on May 21, and three boatloads of inhabitants came aboard with fruit and curios. The ship stc :>d on her course again at 4.30 p.m. During the first week out from Southampton fresh winds and rough seas were encountered, but fine weather then set in and lasted until near the New Zealand coast, when strong winds and moderate seas were experienced. Captain E. T. Smith, R.N.R., is in command of the Ruahine, and the following are his officers: Chief, Mr. H. Reilly; second, Mr. M. A. D. Stewart; third, Mr. J. L. Hamer; fourth, Mr. G. Chaplin; chief engineer, Mr. A. White; second, Mr. D. J. Mclvor; third, Mr. R. Armour; fourth, Mr. A. W. Rooneg; fifth, Mr. R. Cain; sixth, Mr. J. Neill; seventh, Mr. L. J. Jacobs: refrigerating engineers, first, Mr. W. J. Pratt; second, Mr. N. Ives; electrician, Mr. J. Irving; radio operators, Messrs. F. G. Bedford and W. E. Fordham; ship’s surgeon, Dr. J. B. Bate; steward-in-charge, Mr. F. A. Freeman. She is to leave Wellington early this week for Lyttelton, Port Chalmers and Auckland, and is due here about June 7.
