THE REASON WHY

SYDNEY'S CIVIC COMMISSION THE reason for the Royal Commission’s inquiry into the civic graft charges in Sydney were briefly explained by Mr. J. M. Brunton, who arrived by the Aorangi this morning. “It was set up to vindicate the action of the Government in appointing three city commissioners to control Sydney instead of having a city council/’ he said. “The aldermen were put out,” said Mr. Brunton, ‘‘and three very capable and able men were put in their place. “After a while people began to complain and asked 'Why were these three men appointed?’ “‘Very well/ replied the Government, ‘we will show you.’ “And then the Royal Commission’s inquiry started, as the cable messages have told you.”
