CAPTAIN COOK
Australia Remembers Navigator’s Centenary REPRESENTATIVE FOR HAWAII Sir Joseph Carruthers, M.L.C., an ex-Premier of New South Wales, and a sincere admirer of Captain Cook, is on his way to Hawaii to represent officially the Australian Commonwealth Government at the great navigator’s centenary celebrations in August. The Australian Government is sending the cruiser H.M.A.S. Brisbane. The British Navy will be represented. The Pacific Fleet of Uncle Sam will also be in Hawaiian waters for the occasion. On arrival in Auckland this morning by the Aorangi from Sydney the veteran politician admitted that he was a little early for - the Cook festivities. The reason for leaving Australia so soon was that he wanted to spend some time in the Islands. A call will first be mad©, at Fiji. The Cook celebrations will last from August 10 until 17. A monument will be unveiled, explained Sir Joseph, at Kaaui, and there will also
be a ceremony at the monument erected on the island of Hawaii. These islands are at least 200 miles apart. The final portion of the festivities will be held at the Capitol (the former Royal Palace), at Honolulu. The American authorities in Hawaii, said Sir Joseph, were issuing a special coinage in honour of the occasion, also a small Cook celebration postage stamp. “For many years I have been keenly interested in Captain Cook, and I specially welcome this opportunity of paying honour to the memory of a great man. I hope that New Zealand will be represented, too, for Captain Cook is of just as much interest to you in this country as he is to the Australians. . Sir Joseph Carruthers said he would be interested to learn who would officially represent the Dominion at the centenary ceremonies.
