ORPHANS’ CLUB

GOVERNOR-GENERAL ATTENDS

Distinguished guests who attended the meeting of the Auckland Orphans’ Club on Saturday evening included the Governor-General, Sir Charles Fergusson; the Prime Minister, the Right Hon. J. G. Coates; Major-General R. Young, general officer commanding the New Zealand Forces; and Mr. J. S. Barton, S.M., chairman of the Transport Commission. There were about 800 orphans present, including representatives of the Hamilton, Paeroa, Te Awamutu, and Morrinsville Orphans’ Clubs. The guests were welcomed by the president, Mr. J. B. Johnston. His Excellency was decorated with the gold badge of patron, and later the secretary, Mr. J. D. Crawford, presented the Prime Minister with a membership badge. Both his Excellency and Mr. Coates spoke after the presentation. The orchestra, which was conducted by Mr. Harold Baxter, in the absence of Mr. G. F. Cater, gave fine renderings of Verdi’s “La Traviata” and the Oriental overture, “In a Persian Garden.” Others items by Messrs. J. Bree. L. Kernot, L. Echlin, H. McLennan, Rex Yates. Sam Stern, and the Lyric Quartette completed a very fine entertainment. Mr. L. Elliott was accompanist, ._. . __ - _ _
