BAILIFF’S ATTACKER GETS TWELVE MONTHS
ABNORMAL MENTALITY (Special to THE SUN) WANGANUI, Sunday. In the Supreme Court yesterday, Bernard Conray, who was found guilty of common assault on John Curran, a bailiff, was sentenced by Mr. Justice Reed to 12 months’ reformative treatment. In passing sentence his Honour said the assault was entirely unprovoked. The report of the medical officer showed that Conroy was not normal in his mentality toward Curran, and in his evidence he showed not the slightest regret. “You thought you had done something rather smart,’’ said his Honour. “I must take into consideration the recommendation of the jury, although apparently sympathetic, but the responsibility attaches to me of releasing a man who may do serious injury to a fellow citizen. I am compelled to send you to gaol and I hope you will get over this idea when_jou do come out.”
